Body types! Why is so important know about them

body-type1Did you decide to lose weight or improve your physical appearance as well as have a healthier lifestyle? Are you already thinking about war strategies you will use? So, stop everything that you are doing, you should read this post before 😉

During this week we’re going to talk about Body Types.

Why did I choose this topic? Easy, because this is the base for anyone who wants to start an aesthetic treatment, body training or diet program. So I found this argument ideal to start our journey together about beauty and health.

Why is it important to know about your Body type?  Because body type influences how you respond to diet programs, training and aesthetics treatments; understanding them you can do an accurate and efficient plan to achieve yours goals.

Several times I heard my clients complaining at our first appointment, that they are tired of being overwhelmed by the amount of different training programs, with so many conflicting diets. They spent a lot of money in million types of aesthetics treatments and massages but they continued to have no idea what they “should” be doing. The result of this was too much time and money waste with little gains and almost no motivation to work anymore.

What I always explained is:

  1. No pain no gain! It’s hard to listen, but it is true!
  2. Don’t compare yourself with others! Everyone is different and beautiful with her/his own characteristics.
  3. Third, and very important: Know about yourself!

What does it mean? People come in all shapes, but most can be placed into a particular category of body type: mesomorph, ectomorph, or endomorph. These body types have different characteristics, so it’s important to be able to identify and understand your body type. Different body types require different methods of work, and you should tailor your programs to whichever you belong. This also helps me to decide which program to adopt with each client and how long it will take.  Here’s the intro on the different types of bodies:

Ectomorph

Ecto, for short, is slim. If you’re an ecto, mesomorphs and endomorphs usually don’t want to stand next to you. It’s not that ectomorphs aren’t personable, it’s just that you’re probably a tall, slender individual who has trouble gaining weight (oh dear!). As you may have guessed, the perfect example of an ecto is a fashion model.

An ectomorph is relatively linear in shape with a delicate build, narrow hips and pelvis, and long arms and legs. As an ecto, your muscle and bone outlines are usually visible (especially if you are an extremely thin ecto), and you normally have less fat and muscle mass than people with other body types.

ectomorphCommon Ectomorph Characteristics Include:

  • Small joints
  • Skinny appearance
  • Hyperactive
  • Fast metabolism
  • Can eat whatever they want
  • Get full easily
  • Small chest and buttocks
  • Difficulty building muscle
  • Difficulty gaining weight
  • Low body fat
  • Narrow frame (“pencil frame”)

  • Kate Moss
  • Cameron Diaz
  • Gisele Bunchen
  • Brad Pitt
  • Bruce Lee

Mesomorph

Meso, for short, can be defined in one word: muscular. If you’re a meso, your body type is usually the envy of all gym rats because you can increase your muscle size quickly and easily. The well-developed shapes of mesomorphs are representative of their thick bones and muscles. Your abdomen is taut and your hips are generally the same width as your shoulders.

As muscularly defined, athletic-looking individuals, mesomorphs are full of energy, are physically capable of a lot of activity, and tend to be aggressive athletically. (Usually no couch potatoes in this group). Although mesomorphs generally store fat evenly all over their bodies, they can become overweight.

mesomorphTypical traits on a Mesomorph:

  • Athletic

  • Generally hard body
  • Well defined muscles
  • Rectangular shaped body
  • Strong
  • Gains muscle easily
  • Gains fat more easily than ectomorphs
  • Symmetrical build
  • Wide shoulders
  • Small waist
  • Low body fat
  • Seems to put on muscle easily
  • Seems to burn fat easily
  • Eats in moderation

  • Anna Kournikova
  • Arnold Schwarzenegger
  • Bruce Willis
  • Mark Wahlberg

Endomorph

It’s my turn! A one-word description of the endomorph or endo, for short, is curvy. The soft, flowing curves of an endo are similar to that of an hourglass in more ways than one. And wouldn’t you know it; the sands of an hourglass tend to settle in its bottom half just like the fat in the body.

Comparatively, if you’re an endomorph, your body fat may have a tendency to settle into the lower regions of your body, predominantly the lower abdomen, hips, and thighs, rather than being distributed evenly throughout your body. Keep in mind, though, that most endomorphs don’t have all the features of characteristic endomorph, but a blend of features from other body types as well.

endomorphTypical traits of an Endomorph:

  • Soft and round body
  • Gains muscle and fat very easily
  • Is generally short
  • “Stocky” build
  • Round physique
  • Often fatigue easily
  • Insatiable appetite
  • Finds it hard to lose fat
  • Slow metabolism
  • Muscles not so well defined
  • Small limbs

  • Danny de Vito
  • John Goodman
  • Jack Black
  • Jennifer Lopez
  • Oprah Winfrey
  • Beyoncé Knowles

A Combination of Body Types

These body types aren’t set in stone. In fact, most people have a combination of two body types. These combinations are either ectomorph/mesomorph or mesomorph/endomorph. It is not uncommon to find a pure mesomorph that gains weight like an endomorph for example.

So which body type are you?

Given the information above you should be able to identify your body type. Hopefully this intro into the three different body types will help you succeed in your goals! Ectomorphs, mesomorphs, and endomorphs must follow a very different diet to see success.

Now that you know your body type, don’t miss the next posts about the diet, training and specific aesthetics treatments for each body type. See you soon!
